Youtility – The idea of marketing by being useful

I just finished reading Youtility by Jay Baer. When I started this book it did not seem to be talking about anything new. Basically Jay explained that there are only two avenues for marketing your business online today.  You can either be amazing or useful. Not everyone can be amazing and its far from being an exact science. Being useful on the other hand is something just about any business can do.

Marketing is About Help not Hype

Youtility is the idea of marketing by providing useful information. This is what many others would describe as adding or providing value. It is important to understand that this is more than just content marketing.

As I got into the book there was a lot of good information, especially on how the marketing and sales process has fundamentally changed. How the sales person is now often the very last step in the purchase process, only approached (somewhat reluctantly) after 60% or more, of the purchase decision has been made.

Today more people conduct online research and consulting with others before they make direct contact with a seller.

The book is backed up with solid stats and lots of examples. To me it was preaching to the converted.

20 Japanese Electronics companies currently in China are considering relocating their operations to the Philippines

According to Francisco Ferrer from Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. (PhilExport) trustee representing the electronics sector, some 20 Japanese electronics companies currently in China have expressed interest in relocating their operations in the Philippines next year.

“There are renewed interests among the Japanese companies especially those that are located in China to transfer (their bases) from China to the Philippines or to Vietnam or Indonesia,” he said.
He went on to say that some of these companies have started relocating in the country this year and more are coming in 2016 amid higher wages in China and quality of Filipino talent pool.

“Wages are steady, our history will tell us that increases in wages here are not drastic… That is very useful if you are in manufacturing because you can plan better on your costs, how much you are going to sell your products; you can project,” he said.

Ferrer said Japanese investors also considered “ideal” the manpower stability in the Philippines.
“While they are watching the policies of the government, they do not want inconsistent policies, their ultimate requirement is still good, productive workers. (They also prefer) improved infrastructure so movement of products will be cheaper,” he added.

Investment from each company could range from $20 million to $100 million and are expected to generate 25,000 new jobs next year. Laguna, Batangas and Cavite are the preferred location for most of the companies due to infrastructure support.

Marketing by standing out with a better story

makeyourideamatterbook
I have finished reading; Make Your Idea Matter by Bernadette Jiwa, and found it very enlightening. I got a lot of ideas from the book but the main one is that most people do not buy based on logical evaluation of the available offers, they go with who tells the best story.

“You can’t learn to be passionate, but you can learn how to communicate the passion you already have, by telling the best story you can tell.”

There is nothing new in this. It’s all been said before, but there is a difference between being aware of something and really getting it. The book has helped me get it.
The path to success is littered with great ideas poorly marketed. Don’t let yours be one of them.

The cheapest is not always the cheapest

This article is about searching for a furniture removalist in Melbourne but really this advice holds true for most things everywhere.

I remember a guy that worked in a pain shop once telling me that there is no such thing as cheap paint.  There is just paint with more thiner or water added.

There is an old adage that you get what you pay for.  While this if often true there is poor value for money and good value for money.  What we need to look for is the best value for money.  This means as well as looking for hidden charges and exclusions also taking into account the risks associated with an apparently cheap price.

Demise of my childhood hero – John Lennon

I recently saw a link to 10 unpleasant facts about John Lennon and found a few things i didn't know but for the most part i was aware of most of the information provided. The article did not change my mind about him as I had already changed my view of him a long time ago. How do I feel about John Lennon now...

Making your own videos

I have just produced my second video which is a big improvement over the first. I have to admit that getting in front of a camera is not natural for me and does not come easy.  I feel like I have a lot to say,  that is until the rec is clicked, then my mind goes blank.  In my first video I was reading most of what I said. In my second I memorized and then rehearsed what I said.  I am still finding my feet I guess.  I can see the vast improvement in the second video which is far from perfect.

When I say producing the video I mean absolutely every aspect.  I have a copy of Camtasia and I am using that to record and edit the video. Learning that has also been part of the challenge. I am also getting better with that software and able to produce better results.

The equipment is my next concern.  My Mac Air has a pretty good cam but I am using a separate external high quality cam.  I notice that it had a problem focusing a few times but other than that the quality is pretty good.

The real issue is audio quality.  I have used both the internal mic in the Mac and the one built into the external cam.  The difference in sound quality surprised me but I am aware that both are picking up way too much background noise and when i play back with head phones I can hear the constant sound of traffic as we are on a main road. My friend Mat recently posted about a mic he just got and it sounds exactly like what i need.  http://mattwilkie.co.uk/ideal-mic-for-podcasts-and-youtube-videos-samson-go-mic/

If anyone wants to see the result of my work they can view the video on the main page of my site http://socialvisibilityonline.com.au/  or on the youtube channel  http://www.youtube.com/user/VisibilityOnline/.   Please Like and comment about my video  (if you have a youtube account subscribe to my channel)
